If you are interested in trying sew-in extensions, it's important to understand what are hair tracks in hair and what is the difference between hair tracks and hair extensions.

What are Hair Tracks?

What are Hair Tracks?

Let’s start with understanding the hair tracks.

When it comes to sew-in hair extensions, there are primarily two types of wefts that you can use:

  1. machine-tied wefts, which are manufactured using special equipment;
  2. hand-tied wefts, which are handmade usually from human hair. They are sewn manually, taking into account all the parameters of the head and the customer's preferences.

The machine-tied weft is essentially a single hair extension track that is cut into pieces of the required width before sewing to the braid.

The hand-tied weft is a long, single hand-tied track that is also cut into pieces of the desired width, with reliable fixation at the ends to avoid hair shedding.

Generally, from 100 grams of hair, you will get a hair track that is about 78-118 inches (2-3 meters) long, depending on the length and type of hair. The hair track is then cut into different lengths that are selected based on the client's head parameters.

These pieces are then combined in 2 or 3 rows, depending on the client's preferences, and are stitched together.

The resulting product is known as a hand-tied weft. If you want to learn more about how hand-tied wefts are made, you can check out the blog article.

So, what are hair tracks? It is a thin and long line of natural hair that is stitched by hand or with special equipment. The hand-tied weft consists of several stitched hair extension tracks. However, less frequently, hand-tied hair tracks are kept separate, which makes sewing them by the hair tech more inconvenient and time-consuming.

The process of fixing the weft is as follows:

  1. The hairstylist makes a thin braid around the client's head;
  2. A weft (hand-tied or machine-tied) is sewn into the braid.

Hair Tracks vs. Hair Extensions

Still not sure what is the main difference between tracks and extensions?

Hair tracks and hair extensions are both methods used to add length, volume, or style to natural hair, but they differ in how they are applied and the materials used.

Hair Tracks

Hair Tracks

  • Hair tracks refer to the process of attaching hair wefts. They are small sections of hair sewn or attached to a person's natural hair using thread, clips or beads.
  • Hair tracks are usually applied by braiding the natural hair into cornrows or tracks, onto which the wefts are sewn, beaded or clipped.
  • Hair tracks may not be as versatile and can sometimes cause tension or damage to the natural hair if not installed or maintained properly.
  • Hand-tied weft extensions are commonly made of high-quality human hair and tend to be more expensive than other hair extension techniques, as it takes more time to make them.

Hair Extensions

Hair Extensions

  • Hair extensions are strands of hair that are attached to a person's natural hair using various methods such as bonding, clipping, fusion, or tape.
  • For example, fusions use keratin bonds to fix the strands, tape-ins use special ribbons to attach the locks, and clip-ins use small clips to attach the hair. The clip-in extensions are removable and can be installed independently.
  • Hair extensions offer more versatility in terms of styling options and can be applied to specific sections of the hair for customization.
  • Depending on the method of attachment, hair extensions can last for weeks to months before needing maintenance or removal.

In summary, the main differences between hair tracks and hair extensions are:

  1. the method of application
  2. materials used to make them
  3. versatility
  4. cost.

Hair tracks and hair extensions can be made from human hair or synthetic hair. Both methods have their pros and cons, and the choice between them depends on factors such as budget, desired style, and maintenance preferences.

Hair Tracks vs Weave

The difference between tracks and weave lies in:

  1. Thickness: Hair tracks are 2-3 times thinner than hand-tied weave.
  2. Length: Hand-tied weft is usually 6-10 inches or 15-25 cm long (based on customer needs), and a hair track is 78-118 inches (or 2-3 meters) long.
  3. Usage: Most customers prefer to order ready-made hand-tied wefts, while some prefer to sew their own weft, hence opting for a single hand-tied track.

A single hand-tied track can be used as a standalone extension material if the customer wants a very subtle weave at the attachment point.
