If you prefer the sew-in extension method, then you have probably already wondered: how are hand-tied extensions made?

Many of our customers are interested in how much hair they need to make hand-tied wefts and what other nuances they need to take into account to make hair extensions look natural and comfortable to wear. To set the right parameters for the manufacture of the product: the width of each weft, their number, and the thickness of the hair in the weft, you need to know how they are sewn.

After reading our article, you will learn all about how to make weft hair extensions and where you can order them.

How to make hand-tied hair wefts from bulk hair

Hand tied extensions

Hand-tied wefts are hair collected in a single row and fixed on a special base for sewing. They are used for sew-in extensions, where the weft is attached to a thin braid made around the perimeter of the head.

This extension type is one of the most comfortable and unnoticeable in the wear, so more and more customers choose this method to change their hairstyle.

Trying something new, you can not help to ask: is this a safe beauty procedure, and how the wefts are made?

You don’t have to worry about the health of your hair: hand-tied weft extensions are applied without the use of glue or high temperatures that can damage your natural locks.

As for the sewing, let’s dwell in more detail and understand how to make wefts from bulk hair.

Tools you need to make hair wefts

Tools you need to make hair wefts

  • Special thread for weaving

It is selected according to the color of the strands. The cotton weaving thread itself is thin enough not to be noticeable in the hairstyle and durable, not to tear during the sewing of the weft and securely fix the hair in it.

  • Scissors

Needed to cut the required length of thread and cut a single line into several pieces.

  • Weaving sticks

It's a kind of weaving tool that you pull a thread on while weaving a hand-tied weft.

  • Sewing machine

It is necessary to enhance the wefts at the ends (so the hair does not fall apart) and to stitch single lines between each other into the weft (if requested by a customer).

Now you know exactly what tools will be needed if you think about how to make a weft of hair.

In addition to the tools, you also need to choose the right type of hair. We at I Love Slavic Hair recommend using for this purpose:

  1. Virgin Slavic hair - natural hair of premium quality, which is ideal for clients with thin, soft, or weakened curls. Such bundles come undyed, making them a perfect option for those who prefer natural shades.
  2. Russian (dyed) hair has a slightly denser texture. They can be of different structures (curly, wavy, or perfectly sleek) and shades. If the desired color is not in stock, then such hair can be dyed. The main thing is to entrust the work to a qualified colorist, who can change the color of your bundle and does not affect the quality of the strands.
  3. European hair is the densest strands that are often used for machine wefts.

All 3 kinds of raw materials undergo delicate processing, which does not damage the cuticles of hair, so you can wear your hairstyle for as long as possible.

How to make a weft for hair extensions

  • The cotton weaving threads are attached to the hand-tied weft-making sticks.
  • Then the necessary number of threads (2, 3. and more) is determined. The most common option is weaving from 3. The tighter the thread is pulled, the more rigid and inflexible the weft will be.
  • Choose the optimal weaving technique: in 1, 2, or 3 turns. Weft in one turn is the most common option: it comes thicker and denser. Accordingly, wefts for 2 or 3 turns come out thinner.
  • When weaving a weft in one turn, you need to pull 3 threads on the weaving sticks. The strand is started under the bottom thread, then under the second thread. and finally under the top thread. At the end of the weft weaving, the thread is tied with a special knot.

Now you know the main nuances of how to make a hair weft by hand. If you have thick hair then you can opt in for machine weft extensions. Learn how to make a machine weft in one of our blogs.

Why do you sew hand-tied wefts together?

Why do you sew hand-tied wefts together

At first, the hair tech sews one continuous row. When a single track is ready, it is removed from the weaving sticks. The hair tech cuts this single track into pieces of the needed width. They strengthen the ends of the hair row with a sewing machine. They stitch together a certain number of tracks to achieve the needed hair density of the weft or to meet the requested specs.

FAQ: how to make wefts

  • How thick should the hair be when sewing a weft?

The thickness (weight and length of the hair, as well as the width and number of wefts) are selected individually, based on the needs of each client and their specs. All these points are discussed with the hair tech in advance, before sewing.

  • Why does the weft look thin in the image, and in reality, I get a product with a denser sewing foundation?

Depending on the needs of the client (for example, when you need more volume and density), the single lines/tracks are stitched together into a weft. Accordingly, the row of hair will look thicker. But this is not a problem in most cases, as the weft can be unsewn to separate the tracks from each other.

This situation may also occur if the customer ordered, for example, to sew 3 rows out of 200 grams of average length 22-26" (55-65 cm) hair.

  • What happens if you cut the hand-tied weft?

Unlike machine wefts, which can be cut, with hand-tied wefts this can not be done, otherwise, the weft will be damaged and the hair in it will start shedding.

That is why it is so important to give the correct data in advance for sewing: the desired number of wefts, the width of each weft, the density of hair, etc.

  • What is the length loss when sewing?

For machine weft, it is about 2” (5 cm). Hand-tied wefts are made with a smaller loss of length (1-1.5” (2.5-4 cm)).

The length loss depends on the weaving technique: with a quick technique it is bigger (approximately 1.5” (4 cm)). With slow technology, it is practically absent or does not exceed 0.8” (2 cm).

This is a great indicator, because if you do fusions or tape-ins, then after every reapplication procedure you will lose a few centimetres that have been sealed into bonds or tapes. Thus your hair extensions get shorter every time.

In the case of sew-ins, length loss occurs only once, at the stage of weft sewing. This is the perfect solution for clients who want to wear the same hair length and not worry about the locks getting shorter with each reapplication!

  • What happens if the weft is done without my parameters?

The resulting row will be harder (or even impossible) to fix on the head. All this can make wearing hair extensions uncomfortable, as well as noticeable to others. Therefore, the hair stylist first measures the circumference of the head from the temple to the temple and selects a suitable length of the wefts for extensions in accordance with the measurements obtained.

  • How long does the sewing take?

It depends on how busy the hair tech is. On average, sewing a weft from 100-200 grams of hair takes up to 2 weeks from the moment of the order placing.
